Lash extensions at a salon cost $150–$250 plus fills every three weeks. DIY cluster lashes give you the same full, fluffy look at home in about 15 minutes, and a set can be reused. The difference between lashes that last one day and lashes that last a week comes down to four steps.
What you need
- DIY cluster lashes in mixed lengths
- Lash bond and seal
- Precision tweezers
- An oil-free cleanser

Step 1: Prep clean, oil-free lashes
Wash your lash line with an oil-free cleanser and let it dry fully. Skip mascara and eye cream. Any oil on the lashes stops the bond from gripping, and this is the most common reason clusters slide off.
Step 2: Apply bond and wait until tacky
Brush a thin layer of bond along the underside of your natural lashes. Wait about 30 seconds. It should feel tacky, not wet. Applying clusters to wet bond makes them slip and clump.
Step 3: Place clusters underneath your lashes
Hold each cluster with the tweezers and press it up against the underside of your natural lashes, about 1 mm from the lash line. Never place clusters on the skin. Start at the outer corner and work inward:
- Outer corner: longest lengths (12–14 mm)
- Center: medium lengths (10–12 mm)
- Inner corner: shortest lengths (8–10 mm)
This gradient is what makes the result look natural instead of heavy. Most people use 4–6 clusters per eye. Gently pinch your natural lashes and the clusters together with the tweezers to fuse them.
Step 4: Seal
Brush seal over the top of the lashes and through the base. Let it cure for one minute before touching. Seal is what protects the bond from oil, steam and sleep. Skipping it is why most DIY sets fail on day two.
How long do they last?
With bond and seal, 3–7 days. To extend wear, avoid oil-based cleansers and creams near the eyes, and sleep on your back if you can.
How to remove them safely
Soak a cotton pad in an oil-based cleanser or remover, hold it on the lash line for 30 seconds, then slide clusters off gently. Never pull. Pulling removes natural lashes with them. Clean the clusters, let them dry, and store them flat in their tray to reuse.
Quick troubleshooting
- Clusters lifting at the ends: bond was still wet when applied. Wait longer.
- Visible gaps: place clusters closer together, 1–2 mm apart.
- Looks too heavy: switch to a lower density (30D–40D) or use fewer clusters.
